Top National Outdoorsy FaceBook Groups to Join to Make Friends

Hi, I’m Brianna. I have been traveling full-time for the last four years and love sharing my experiences to help empower travelers, especially solo women like myself, to get out and explore. I have spent nine months traveling and living out of my converted bus, and now I am moving between Airbnbs all around the world.

When I started traveling full-time, I had a hard time meeting people but joining Facebook groups has been an excellent tool for me to meet new people and learn about new areas to explore. While there are a lot of groups out there, some are more supportive and active than others. Here are the top three I’d recommend:

Outsiders, Together: (35k members)

This is a great group to connect with people all over the United States and worldwide. There are postings about events, from potlucks to movie nights and camping adventures, for nomads to meet and mingle. States with many outdoor activities, like those on the West Coast, have many people who are a part of this group, and there are events almost every day.

“Outsiders, Together” is not the best page for finding travel tips or posing inquiries. Still, it is the top Facebook group I recommend, as people are very active and excited to connect in person!

Outdoorsy Gals: (139k members)

This national group is for women over 18 who travel and enjoy outdoor activities. This page is mainly filled with hiking and camping tips and is a great place to pose questions about safe and fun places to stay in different states. “Outdoorsy Gals” also organizes international trips for strangers to come together and explore new places. Some people also post about new places they are living to find friends with similar interests.

This page also has subgroups based on one’s state or region, but note that you must join the national group first. These more local groups, such as “Outdoorsy Gals Texas,” offer a better way to meet people, though there are still fewer event options than “Outsiders, Together.” One or two monthly events are listed here, many of which are group hikes.

Solo female van life: (18k members)

Are you looking for tips on how to travel safely? This group is a great place to ask for feedback on building out a van, how to cook on the road, and where to park safely. It is also a sweet space where women share photos of their vans and adventures, receive encouragement, and help inspire others to keep adventuring. From debates on the best portable toilets to choosing road trip routes, this group offers a safe space for women to support each other’s journeys, though it doesn’t focus on providing a space for people to meet up.

Here are some general safety tips for traveling solo:

  • Tell a trusted person where you are traveling. If you are going off the grid, share the name of the campsite and how long you plan on being gone.
  • Think ahead about packing adequate water, food, and items like a power pack to ensure you have service to travel safely, especially in remote places.
  • If meeting up with people you connected with online, do so in a public place.
